SAVEME is the acronym used to remember the steps of administering naloxone. NaloxHome volunteer Micah explains what the steps are:
💜Stimulate - check to make sure the individual is not simply asleep. Perform a trap squeeze, sternum rub, or gently kick their feet depending on your comfort level. CALL 911!
💜Airway - check their airway to ensure no food or gum is stuck in their mouth preventing proper breathing
💜Ventilate - if comfortable, use the mouth guard in your naloxone kit to give breaths. Cover their nose and tilt their chin up and provide 1 breath every 5 seconds
💜Evaluate - is the person breathing on their own again? If not, move to the next step
💜Medicate - administer naloxone! Open your kit and fill the needle with the medication from one of the ampules. Inject into their thigh, side of arm, or butt. You can inject through clothing if needed. Push the needle until you hear a click. Naloxone needles are retracting, so you do not have to worry about having a loose needle afterwards!
💜Evaluate again - naloxone can take 3-5 minutes to kick in. If they have not woken after 5 minutes, administer another ampule of naloxone.
